Seasons: The season runs from September 15th through April 1st in Southern Mexico. In San Fernando, Tamauliupas, MX season runs from November 1 until the end of February.
Clothing
Duck hunters should wear camouflage clothing and hats at all times. Also, as temperatures vary from mid 30's to low 90's during the season, be sure to be prepared for all types of temperatures and weather situations. Dress in layers and be sure to have a rain proof jacket to wear while in the blind or boat.
Hunters should also bring waders and hip boots as water levels and blind types vary from day to day, and year to year. CFO sells and rents waders, and hip boots at the lodge for those that do not want to carry their own.
Also: sunscreen, insect repellent, gun oil, earplugs, shooting glasses, and shooting gloves.
Accommodations
All dining and guestrooms (primarily single occupancy) are clean, comfortable and air conditioned/heated. Each guestroom has a shower. Meals are served in the large dining room, and afterwards guests can gather around the fireplace to relax. All dress is casual at the lodge. Gun cleaning is available also.
Food & Drink
All food is good and safe, with no digestive problem. The water and ice are totally safe for drinking, with the exception of tap water. Your “open bar” package consists of beer and soft drinks in the field and a good bar with American brands at the lodge.
Guns & Ammo
We suggest you borrow one of Crazy Feather’s new model Benelli shotguns (20 and 12 gauge) and not fool with bringing your own firearms. The application process is greatly simplified and customs clearance and check-point hassles are eliminated. If you decide to bring your own guns, there is an extra $150 fee for gun permit.
Guns choke demand vary from day to day and species to species, so we suggest that duck hunters bring a set of chokes (or at minimum an improved and modified) for the different types of shooting opportunities while with us. If you do choose to bring your own gun, then we suggest you bring two (the maximum) in case of breakdown in the field. Some type of hard case is required for transporting guns on commercial airlines. Shooters bringing guns can bring four boxes of shells per gun. Unlimited 12- and 20-gauge shells are available for purchase at the lodge for $12-$15.00 per box.
Travel Information
A representative of Crazy Feather Outfitters will meet you at the airport, assist with customs clearance and transfer you to the lodge. Arrangements as to which airports should be used by hunters should be made prior to hunt, and hunters should notify CFO by email and phone as to the exact flight arrival and departure times.
All duck hunters using the San Fernando, Tamauliupas, MX lodge are encouraged to use either Brownsville or Harlingen, TX airports.
Licenses
Crazy Feather Outfitters will send out license applications each fall, or they may be downloaded on the CFO website. After your application is received, CFO will arrange for all licenses and permits to be ready upon your arrival at the lodge and the Crazy Feather representative will provide you with the documents upon your arrival. Please remember to bring your proof of citizenship with you. A passport, birth certificate/driver’s license or voter’s registration card/driver’s license is acceptable.
Lodge Fees & Tips
Plan to tip around $150.00 in total for the Mexican guides, bird boys and lodge staff. Shells and tips can be paid for at conclusion of hunt with a personal check or cash.
