HUNTING SEASON
Season runs from early September until November of each fall. Temperatures vary considerably but September normally finds temperatures between 30 and 80 degrees. October is normally between mid 20's and 75.
Limit is 5 birds per day, but additional birds may be taken for a fee of $40 per bird.
Clothing
All hunters must wear orange vest and hats. A game vest or upland coat is a must. Comfortable, waterproof boots are a must. CFO recommends bringing along an extra pair of boots "just in case", or even a pair of rubber boots for the rainy days. Clothing comfortable for walking and warm enough for riding on the trucks is recommended.
Shooting glasses, hearing protection, sunscreen, gun oil, shooting gloves and insect repellent are other things that hunters need to bring along.
Accommodations
Lodging is provided on grounds at Rocky Ridge in the main guest house located in the center of ranch. Lodging is in a freshly remodeled and comfortable farm house with 8 individual rooms. Rocky Ridge also has a new, large, and beautiful restaurant which feeds all of the hunters each day and which will be a highlight of the trip! The lodge and restaurant are only about 5 minutes apart and both are located on the hunting grounds near Harold, South Dakota about 45 minutes east of Pierre, SD.
Guns and Ammo
Hunters should bring their own guns, unless arrangements are made prior to the hunt with CFO, and most use 20, 16 and 12 gauge shotguns. Ammunition may be brought along, but is available on the grounds. No shot larger than #6 shot is allowed for safety reasons.
Travel Information
Travel may be by plane into the Sioux Falls or Pierre, SD airports where hunters will be picked up and delivered by CFO. Also, many hunters may choose to drive and maps may be obtained by contacting CFO in advance of the hunt.
Licenses
Hunters are encouraged to buy license online prior to the hunt from the South Dakota Department of Natural Resources. However, licenses are available at the lodge.
Game
Bird cleaning is available at the lodge, and hunters should let CFO representative know upon arrival if they have plans to take birds home at the end of hunt.
Lodge Fees and Tips
Hunters should plan on a tip of around $100 for the guides, cooks, waitresses, etc. while on the hunt.
