Quail Hunting Pre-Trip Information

Hunting
Prime season is November 1-February 28. Temperatures vary from low 40’s to high 80’s, so bring clothes in which you can be comfortable, regardless of the weather. Usually it is between 60-80 degrees. Snake chaps are recommended. A comfortable pair of boots is a necessity. Orange hats and vest are recommended. Also: sunscreen, insect repellent, gun oil, earplugs, shooting glasses, and shooting gloves.

Accommodations
All dining and guestrooms (primarily single occupancy) are clean, comfortable and air conditioned/heated. Each guestroom has a shower. Meals are served in the large dining room, and afterwards guests can gather around the fireplace to relax. All dress is casual at the lodge. Gun cleaning is available also.

Clothing
Hunters should be prepared for all types of weather and temperatures as the climate is quite variable. CFO recommends dressing in layers of T shirt, long shirt, jacket, and heavier columbia type rain proof jacket in order to be able to hunt in every type of weather situation. Temperatures vary from mid 30 through low 90's throughout the season, and most days are between 50-85, but the cool days are quite cold in relation to temperature due to high humidity.

Food & Drink
All food is good and safe, with no digestive problem. The water and ice are totally safe for drinking, with the exception of tap water. Your “open bar” package consists of beer and soft drinks in the field and a good bar with American brands at the lodge.

Guns & Ammo
We suggest you borrow one of Crazy Feather’s new model Benelli shotguns (20 and 12 gauge) and not fool with bringing your own firearms. CFO uses Benelli guns and if hunters want to change choke they should bring their own chokes. The application process is greatly simplified and customs clearance and check-point hassles are eliminated. If you decide to bring your own guns, there is an extra $150 fee.

Guns should be choked skeet to modified and we suggest you bring two (the maximum) in case of breakdown in the field. Some type of hard case is required for transporting guns on commercial airlines. Shooters bringing guns can bring four boxes of shells per gun. Unlimited 12- and 20-gauge shells are available for purchase at the lodge for $12-$15.00 per box.

Travel Information
Outfitter, Gerry Glasco, prefers that clients arrive in Brownsville, TX (Harlingen, TX is an acceptable alternative.)  A representative of Crazy Feather Outfitters will meet you at the airport, assist with customs clearance and transfer you 2 1/2 hours to the lodge in the town of San Fernando. The four lane highway surface is quite good.

Licenses
Crazy Feather Outfitters will arrange for all licenses and permits and the Crazy Feather representative will provide you with the documents upon your arrival. Please remember to bring your proof of citizenship with you. A passport, birth certificate/driver’s license or voter’s registration card/driver’s license is acceptable.

Lodge Fees & Tips
Plan to tip around $100 $150. total for the Mexican guides, dog handlers, bird boys and lodge staff. Shells and tips can be paid for with a personal check or cash.
